Did you just have an accident and damage your teeth?

You may be eligible for TAC (Transport Accident Commission) cover for dental treatment in Victoria.

What to do if you’ve suffered dental trauma in a transport accident

If you’ve recently been in a transport accident — perhaps you were hit as a pedestrian, cyclist or passenger in a vehicle — and your teeth were injured or broken, here’s how TAC and dental care works:

  • Get medical attention right away – Your doctor or hospital should document any dental injuries. This is essential for your TAC claim.
  • Lodge a TAC claim as soon as possible
  • You have up to 12 months from the accident (or from when your dental injury first became evident) to lodge a TAC claim. That can even be extended up to 3 years in exceptional circumstances
  • See a dentist quickly
  • Within the first 90 days after your accident, the TAC can cover emergency dental care—with no prior approval needed—if:
  • you already have a TAC claim number, and
  • a health professional (your doctor or dentist) recommends it, and
  • it clearly relates to your accident injuries
  • With DentalOne this includes urgent diagnostics, tooth repair, replantation or splinting of teeth, x‑rays, and specialist dental treatment.

What is a TAC Claim?

What if it’s been over 90 days?
Treatment after that window will require TAC approval first, especially for more complex procedures such as crowns, implants, root canals or hospital-based oral surgery.

  • 0–90 days: covered automatically
  • After 90 days: approval needed

How payments work
Providers are paid at the published TAC rate for dental services.
If your dental clinic charges more than this rate, you may have to pay the difference (a “gap payment”). In most cases, TAC does not reimburse gap costs—but you might seek extra reimbursement through Medicare or private health insurance

Why act fast?

Because TAC can pay for most urgent dental care within the first 90 days without needing prior approval — and this early treatment is often crucial in saving or stabilising injured teeth. Missing that window can lead to delays and possibly more invasive procedures later, which may need formal approval

How Dental One can help

At Dental One, we specialise in helping accident victims through the TAC dental claims process:

  • We assist with lodging your TAC claim and handle the paperwork.
  • We guide you through the TAC treatment plan process when approval is required.
  • Our clinics offer emergency dental care across Melbourne locations like Caroline Springs, Essendon, Bayswater, Reservoir, Richmond, South Yarra, Craigieburn, Epping and Templestowe
  • We work with TAC rates and can advise if a gap payment applies—and help you with other insurance or Medicare claims

What to do now?

If you’ve just had a transport accident and your teeth are injured, don’t delay.

  • Get your medical documents, lodge a TAC claim fast.
  • Try to see a TAC-aware dentist within 90 days where most urgent treatments are covered automatically.
  • For more complex or late-stage care, you’ll need TAC approval—but DentalOne can help manage that whole pathway.
