Screening for oral cancer is not something most people think about. Recent statistics show oral cancer screening is something that should be done routinely. It is no longer only older people who are at risk of developing head and neck cancers.

Understanding Oral Cancer

Oral cancer, often overshadowed by more well-known cancers like breast or prostate, demands awareness of risk factors and vigilant oral hygiene for effective prevention. It encompasses multiple areas in the mouth, including the lips, cheeks, tongue, tonsils, throat, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, and sinuses. Increased risks are associated with smoking, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection.

Historically, the prevalence has been higher among men, but a shifting trend is seeing an uptick in cases among women. This emphasizes the importance of both genders taking proactive steps. Regular dental check-ups are crucial, and individuals should refrain from tobacco and excessive alcohol use. Safe practices to minimise the risk of HPV infection also play a pivotal role. Early detection through routine screenings and awareness of symptoms further enhances the chances of successful treatment.

The symptoms of mouth, head and neck cancer can include:

  • White or red patches inside the mouth.
  • A lump in the mouth or neck.
  • Thickening or hardening of the cheek or tongue.
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the tongue.
  • A persistant sore throat and hoarseness.
  • Persistent nosebleeds and a stuffy nose.
  • Unexplained loose teeth.

Increased Risk Factors

  • Smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes or marijuana.
  • Chew smokeless tobacco
  • Drink alcohol and products containing alcohol.
  • Are exposed to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV has been linked to cancer in the tonsil and throat area.
  • Are overexposed to the sun. This increases your risk of lip cancer.

Prevention

Key to the prevention of oral cancer is to give up tobacco usage and adopt a sensible approach to the consumption of alcohol. It is estimated that at least three-quarters of oral cancers could be prevented by eliminating tobacco smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.

  • Check your mouth regularly for changes, for example, when brushing your teeth.
  • Visit your dentist regularly, even if you have no teeth and wear dentures.
  • Use a lip balm that contains sun block.
  • A healthy diet with at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables may also reduce the risk of oral cancer.
